History of Indian head massage?

Indian head massage (IHM) is a complementary therapy, that has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. In India, massage is a part of everyday family life and the techniques have been passed down from generation to generation. It is the usual practice that while visiting the barber’s shop in India, a customer would also receive an Indian Head Massage. It is also incorporated into special rituals such as weddings and births.

What is Indian head massage?

Indian head massage involves working on the head, neck and shoulder areas and was originally used to improve scalp and hair condition. Various pressures and techniques are used during a treatment, including circular massage strokes on your scalp, deep tissue work on your shoulders, and stretching the neck.  IHM aims to rebalance your body's energies.

Indian head massage is being incorporated into patient care by the NHS.  Click on the link to an interesting article in the Nursing Times detailing how IHM is benefitted patients on an acute mental health ward and the physical and psychological benefits noted from the studies carried out. Click Here.

Indian head massage and Chakras.

This form of massage focuses on the three higher "chakras" known as the Crown Chakra, Brow Chakra and Throat Chakra  If you follow your IHM with a 30 minutes Reiki session, the remaining chakras will be worked on, which will aim to bring the whole body into balance.

What does Indian Head Massage do for you?

Whilst Indian head massage is deeply relaxing, this treatment offers all kinds of other benefits too. It may relieve aches, pains and tension in your neck, back and shoulders and by stimulating the hair follicles it is believed to improve hair texture and increase hair growth.

Indian Head Massage may also be good for:

  1.   Stress, tension, fatigue

  2.   Insomnia

  3.   Headaches, migraine

  4.   Sinusitis

  5.   Joint mobility/flexibility in the neck and shoulders

  6.   Circulation

What to wear for Indian Head Massage?

For your massage, please wear loose-fitting clothing so that you don't feel restricted or uncomfortable. Also, try not to wear too many layers.

Ladies, a singlet is ideal so that the top straps and bra straps can easily be moved out of the way.  A sports bra that crosses over at the back is not a good idea as the straps cannot be easily moved aside.

During your massage,  your neck, shoulders and your upper back will be worked on, so a high neck top is also not a good idea.

Indian head massage is kind to hair; it is not kind to hair-dos. Remove any hair bands, clips or slides before you go in, and if you are booking a hair appointment, do so for the day after.

Bear in mind as well that you may wish to bring a brush, "Alice" or other hair band with you to make yourself look respectable on your way home, or back at work.

Precautions

As with any treatment it is important to tell your therapist in advance if you:

  • are, or think you might be, pregnant

  • have any medical conditions or are receiving any treatment or medication

  • have recently had an injury or operation

  • are allergic to anything, particularly skin allergies

  • have any broken skin or sores on your scalp

as this may affect the treatment you receive.

When might I not be able to have Indian Head Massage?

If any of the following apply, you must seek medical approval from your GP/Consultant for the treatment to go ahead, prior to booking an Indian Head Massage.

  1.  Had recent surgery

  2.  A head or neck injury

  3.  A history of thrombosis or embolism

  4.  Spondylitis or spondylosis

  5.  High or low blood pressure

  6.  Diabetes

  7.  Any kind of heart condition

  8.  Cancer

  9.  Osteoporosis

Your Treatment
What is the Cost?

Lorna will chat with you beforehand to get an idea of your lifestyle, any particular aches, pains or ailments you have. She may ask you if you are having any medical treatments or taking medicines, as this might affect what type of pressure and technique.

Some of the massage techniques will be quite firm and you may find the sensations a little odd but it will feel really relaxed and serene afterwards. The results are worth it.

A complete Indian head massage will take approximately 45 minutes (please allow an hour for your appointment time).

A one hour appointment costs £45.

Hot Tip!
What to expect after.

Get this treatment combined with a Reiki session for an even deeper relaxation and energy balancing:

Indian Head Massage with Usui Reiki Healing

You should not find a head massage painful.  If you have any worries about a massage, please speak to Lorna in advance and notify her at any stage of the massage if you feel uncomfortable.

After an Indian head massage, you will most likely feel great and very relaxed.

However some people experience tiredness, dizziness, increased urination (as the body gets rid of toxins and waste materials) or aching muscles. Side effects usually last for no more than a few hours, after which people generally experience increased energy and alertness.

I have been seeing Lorna since January 2022 for crystal reiki sessions due to stress and anxiety.  From the moment you walk through the door you feel Lorna's calming and sensitive nature and zest for life.  She has been a shoulder to cry on and a huge support with her guidance and sensitivity.  Each session leaves me feeling relaxed and calm and helps set my intentions in place.  Due to Lorna and her wonderful healing hands, my reiki journey has developed and I have managed to return to work.  I owe this to the power of reiki healing.

I would highly recommend any of Lorna's sessions and have myself enjoyed crystal reiki, distant reiki and Indian head massage.

I used my gift voucher for an Indian Head Massage.  This was the first time I have had this holistic treatment and it was absolutely wonderful. Lorna's technique and pressure with the massage was spot on and I felt extremely relaxed and fell into a very deep meditative state. For the duration of the actual treatment and the rest of the eventing I felt rested and relaxed and will be booking another session as soon as I can.

Lorna also combines treatments so you can have Reiki and Indian Head massage.  I think that sounds like absolute bliss. I'll be back!!

I reached out for Reiki with Lorna at Suffolk Reiki and have so far had 5 sessions.  I primarily wanted to work on my anger which is from PTSD and felt I wasn't in control of it. I have found Lorna to be a very powerful healer and one of the most caring and empathetic people I have met.

I think this is a very powerful healing tool especially for PTSD and would thoroughly recommend it to people to try.

Thank you for everything!

I was new to Reiki this year and have had regular sessions with Lorna.  It has been amazing, very relaxing, feels like I've been resting and recharging, highly recommend it, and as for the current climate - Lorna has done some distant Reiki for me, felt the benefit immediately and felt like I had had an in-person treatment from her, she's truly gifted!

As a nurse at the moment, her treatments are really helping me to cope.

I'm so grateful to have met her.
